Handcrafted Jewellery Designer Based in Inverloch, Victoria, Australia
Growing up in the remote pearling town of Broome was where Joseph Courtenay’s fascination with the exquisite beauty of Australian gems started.
His career as a jeweller began in Broome’s famed Chinatown, for Broome Pearls Pty Ltd., on the foreshores of the richest pearling grounds in the world.
“When I left school, getting a jewellery apprenticeship in Broome was a dream come true. I was surrounded by some of the most creative jewellers in the country who were doing brilliant things, highlighting the natural beauty of south Sea Pearls and Australian gemstones.
“As well as stunning pearls being harvested each year from local waters, there were pink diamonds from the Argyle diamond mine in the Kimberley’s and opals from NSW and Central Australia.
The craftsmanship and pride that went into the customized pieces I saw being produced had an enormous influence on me.”

While living in Broome, Joseph supplemented his training as a jeweller with working on the pearling fleets and remote Pearl Farms, as a diver, deckhand and in many other amazing job roles up and down the north of Australia. “It was an amazing insight and experience to be part of the industry and the effort that goes into producing rare gem-quality pearls in the remote waters of the Kimberly’s.”
Joseph has worked as a jeweller on and off since 1997 and eventually settled in Inverloch, where he is now the proud father of two boys. He continues to be inspired by the surrounding natural environment and the amazing Australian gems that come from it. “Living on the coast in Inverloch, the amazing surroundings are a constant source of my inspiration and passion.
